Thanks to its HDR recording and mobile video ecosystem, the iPhone just edges it out, but video shooters who prefer the Android operating system cannot go wrong with the Xiaomi. However, thanks to a 5x tele-module with folded optics and clever image-merging technology, it is not far off, and might be easier to get ahold of in many countries than the Xiaomi, which is currently reserved for certain Asian markets only. If interior images, landscapes, and group shots make up an important proportion of your photographic portfolio, you are likely to appreciate the ultra-wide cameras that have become pretty much a standard feature on high-end smartphones over the past couple of years or so.

Not all ultra-wide cameras are the same, though—we found huge differences in our test results in terms of both effective field of view and general image quality. Despite its very wide lens, the Samsung is capable of maintaining good image quality across all tested focal lengths from 12mm- to 20mm-equivalent. Color rendering is good as well, with vivid and pleasant colors, and the auto white balance system produces good results even under artificial lighting. As for detail, the Samsung does well in outdoor conditions, but loses some points when shooting under typical indoor lighting. Noise is quite visible in blue skies, even when shooting in bright light, and noise levels indoors are slightly higher than the best-in-class devices.

On the plus side, the iPhone rendered fine detail and textures better.

Until not too long ago, smartphone cameras were capable of achieving good results in bright light conditions, but you wanted to make sure to carry your DSLR or large-sensor compact camera with you when shooting low-light or night images. Things have changed now. Thanks to a combination of new sensor technologies and innovative computational imaging methods, many of the latest generation of high-end smartphones are more than capable of delivering good results in dim conditions—and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the best among them.

As a result, the Mate 30 Pro scores an impressive 61 points in our Night tests, the currently best score in our ranking. This score is based on good exposure and color saturation down to extremely low light levels, and on well-exposed cityscape shots with wide dynamic range and low noise levels. The latter is a particular strength of the Huawei when shooting in low light, even if under close inspection, detail can look a little soft in low-light conditions.

In addition, the Mate 30 Pro deploys an interesting flash-triggering strategy in flash-auto mode. When the scene is bright enough for the camera to achieve an accurate target exposure, low noise, and good detail, the flash does not trigger. When it gets too dark, it triggers the flash, which secures good exposure and detail on faces, but means that the background will be underexposed. This is generally a sensible strategy for capturing good image quality in almost any low-light situation.

When you want to take a selfie, a camera pops up from the top left edge, putting itself away when you're done. I'm not convinced about the concept of the pop-up camera: the motor is a point of failure, and if it does fail, your selfie days are over.

That said, the front camera arrangement does allow for that much-desired all-screen frontage, and Xiaomi has covered three important bases as far as the mechanism is concerned. It has been tested for , pop-ups -- probably more than even the most snap-happy selfie fans will require over the phone's lifetime. It will retract automatically when it detects pressure, although I found I had to apply a fair bit for this to work.

And there's a clever anti-drop mechanism that will retract the camera if the handset falls through the air. I'm not sure we need the two blue side-lights that illuminate when the camera pops up and down, or its little tinkling trill of a musical flourish that ascends the scale when it rises from the chassis and descends when it packs away.

Both will be distracting in certain situations. You can disable sounds, but I couldn't see how to disable the lights. The pop-up selfie camera is a 20MP unit with a clever panorama mode that allows you to take wide-format selfies just by tilting the phone. The default shooting mode is 12 megapixels, although there's a link to 48MP shooting on the main camera interface so it's easy to switch.

Conclusions

AI helps the camera make default settings for a range of subjects, and I found its suggestions very satisfactory for the most part. The exception was night mode. There is a dedicated night mode setting on the camera interface, and in well-lit situations images are passable.

But in general night photography is of average quality, and in low light situations you may struggle to get passable images. I've moved to Geekbench 5 for benchmarking and this reports rather differently to its predecessor.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro is a flagship-class handset with a great screen, good battery life, dual SIM support, an in-screen fingerprint reader and a 3. The triple rear camera setup is very capable, and while the pop-out selfie camera's mechanism might not appeal to everybody, there's nothing wrong with its photo quality. The biggest drawback is the mono speaker, but even taking that into account Xiaomi proves once again that its aggressive pricing allows its handsets to challenge considerably more expensive smartphones.
