It's difficult for a review to capture all the nuances of how incredible the Mate XS is as a hybrid device, or how far-reaching the lack of Google Mobile Services is to a western user. Despite launching in , it only hit select shelves in the west in Unsurprisingly, the theater surrounding its sale is an ongoing, carefully orchestrated production. Sales staff are being briefed on how to sell a phone with no Google services and who to sell it to. Huawei is also, no doubt, assessing how much a fantastic bit of hardware which the Mate 30 Pro certainly is , is being held back by the software situation.
I already had some experience with that phone, so had some idea of what to expect. I opened the box on the train, handling it as if a relic that might turn to ash if the wind changed direction.
Test summary
All the buzz surrounding the Mate XS made mention of the plastic screen being ever-exposed, so the last thing I wanted to do was scuff it up before I fired it up. Huawei has fortified the plastic on the front with, well, more plastic. A double layer and adhered together, with the screen coating costing more, pound for pound, than gold. I wanted to try being a little haphazard about how I used the Mate XS in my time with it - just not straight out of the gate. As the Huawei logo flashed up, first impressions were positive - an impossibly thin tablet, that turns into a phone, a folding screen that doesn't feel naff - this is special.
The setup process was very similar to that of the Mate 30 Pro. Connect to Wi-Fi, log into a Huawei account, link it up with Huawei Phone Clone on an old device at around 60Mbps no less , and bam - all my apps bar Google-related services and my Barclays banking app shifted across. If the political situation didn't rule out half of North America, that last point would, as -5 isn't event that cold! This was doing nothing for my fear of using the Huawei Mate XS in the real world. Before I dove into the software, first things first, I folded and unfolded it - a lot. The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition is again third for still photos, but remains the king of zoom performance, thanks to its multiple focal length optics and image pipeline processing.
Night shooting, bokeh simulation, detail preservation, and exposure are all key strengths for still photos on the Honor V30 Pro. In near-dark conditions, Night mode ensures bright exposures and nice details. Flash portraits at night are also very good, with accurate exposure on the subject and more details in the background compared to the key competition.
Honor View 30 Pro review: our full review – smartphones | Web24 News
For video, the Honor V30 Pro drops down to joint seventh in the rankings overall, but its Video score of is only 2 points off the top-ranked Huawei Mate 30 Pro at The texture -versus-noise trade-off is good and detail is high in most videos, but more denoising artifacts are visible on the V30 Pro compared to the top performers. The Honor device is excellent outdoors, but also delivers accurate target exposures in lower light conditions, even down to near pitch-black conditions of just 1 lux.
Contrast is also good in all lighting conditions; and in tricky high-contrast scenes outdoors, dynamic range is fairly wide, with details preserved in both highlight and shadow regions. In our indoor backlit portrait scene, the Honor V30 Pro is able to provide nice exposure on the subject while maintaining most of the bright highlight detail outside. Some clipping was evident in very challenging backlit scenes, with overall exposure pretty much on the same level as the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
Overall color rendering is pleasant on the Honor V30 Pro, with vivid and well-saturated color in all lighting conditions. White balance on the whole is fairly neutral, although a slight blueish cast is evident in the shadows of outdoor images, which is particularly noticeable in high dynamic range shots.
Skin tones are generally accurate, however, and color shading is very well controlled in almost all images, with only a minor shift in tones evident in extreme low-light shots. In our backlit colored balconies scene, the Honor V30 Pro delivers a richer sky compared to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G example, but the white balance is more neutral in the Huawei shot, particularly in the shadows.
Very fine texture rendering and edge definition is fractionally better on the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition, thanks in part to its higher-resolution sensor, but the Honor V30 Pro comes very close and has lower noise. All three of our current top-ranked devices maintain a high level of detail in all lighting conditions, but the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition is slightly better overall.
The improved noise reduction from the Honor V30 Pro is more apparent in one of our lab analysis scenes at lux, however, where not only are flat areas of color noticeably smoother on the V30 Pro compared to the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition, but the V30 Pro also has fractionally better edge definition compared to the Huawei Mate Pro 5G. Autofocus is an area of improvement for Honor in future flagship devices. Exposures are accurate in both outdoor and indoor lighting conditions using the wide camera, too, with fairly good dynamic range and pleasant color rendering. Boasting the same tele-camera hardware as the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G, zoom results from the Honor V30 Pro are very similar, although a refined image pipeline has slightly improved detail at some distances.
The Honor V30 Pro is a top performer for bokeh simulation in Portrait mode, thanks to good results both indoors and outdoors, accurate and repeatable depth estimation, a fairly natural blur gradient effect, and excellent face detail. Slight white balance variations across consecutive shots are evident, too, with occasional pinkish or orange hues visible; but generally speaking, white balance is neutral, particularly under artificial lighting indoors.
Honor 20 review: Huawei's first new phone during Trump dispute
Contrast is usually quite high in bokeh shots, and detail as well as noise in portraits is excellent. Shooting natural scenes in near-dark conditions—lit only by distant street and building lights—images show good exposure, with good levels of detail and low noise. Night mode shots can further improve dynamic range, color, and detail in dark areas.

Night mode, flash-auto, and flash-off shots from our two top-ranked devices are exceptional overall, but the Honor V30 Pro just takes it. In the flash-off scene below, both the Honor and Huawei offer better dynamic range than the Xiaomi, with better highlight and shadow detail. The Honor is also capable of retaining some detail while keeping noise well under control. In auto-flash mode, the flash triggers accurately and consistently when a portrait is detected.
Target exposures are very good, with no overexposure of the subject. Dynamic range is also excellent here, with a brighter exposure of the ambient light in the background compared to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G and the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Premium Edition, without any significant highlight clipping in bright light sources. We deduct points for obvious artifacts or image quality flaws visible in images. We also noted inconsistent sharpness across the frame, some ghosting artifacts, and low localized texture in some images, but these were less frequent or problematic.
The bits that are visible look premium, but the ones that are hidden still feels as though they are made of high-quality plastic. The Honor Watch Magic has a metal dial while the base is made out of plastic. The same principle has been applied to the strap as well.
It's made of silicone but has a layer of Italian cowhide on the top. Since the back is silicone, you can wear it to the gym or during runs without worrying about damaging the leather. You'll find quick release pins on the strap, and like with most other smartwatches, you can swap it out for any other band of your choice.
We quite liked the band that came with our Watch Magic review unit, since it was different than what we usually see. Turn the watch around and you'll spot the heart rate sensor as well as the pogo pin connectors to charge this device. The charger is disc-shaped and has a magnet to ensure that its charging pins make proper contact with the watch. We found this to be quite useful, and the magnetic pull is strong enough for the watch to stay connected. The charging disc has a USB Type-C port which is a good thing, since you won't have to carry an additional cable for charging the watch if you're using a reasonably modern Android smartphone.
It measures 1. It has a density of out ppi and is crisp to look at. When outdoors, we found the display to be bright enough to be legible. The Watch Magic has a mAh battery which is small compared to some of the other smartwatches in the market.

It is compatible with Android phones running Android 4. It has Bluetooth 4. You will need the Huawei Health app on your smartphone to pair the watch with. The watch faces are customisable and you can choose between multiple options that come preloaded. Since this device is running on proprietary software, watch faces are limited, and we couldn't download new ones. Different watch faces highlight the different types of data that the watch records. You can use one that shows your heart rate and the number of steps you've taken, while some others have VO2 Max readings or show your current altitude.
The Honor Watch Magic has a heart-rate sensor at the back. Honor has packed a lot of features into the Watch Magic. Apart from the usual step and sleep tracking, this device is capable of recording workouts, swims, and cycling, among other activities.
Powerfully Compact
It also has a breathing exercise feature that lets you set the intensity and the duration before it starts guiding you. A compass app helps you determine what direction you are headed in, and a barometer app uses the device's internal sensor to measure pressure. The Honor Watch Magic is capable of measuring stress, and this feature is listed in the device menu.
However, Honor told Gadgets that this feature is only available in China at the moment. Continuous heart tracking is also available, and so is automatic sleep tracking.
